About BHS
Brooklyn Historical Society’s mission is to connect the past to the present and make the vibrant history of Brooklyn tangible, relevant, and meaningful for today’s diverse communities, and for generations to come. Founded in 1863, BHS is a nationally-recognized urban history center, comprised of a museum, scholarly research library, and education center dedicated to preserving and encouraging the study of Brooklyn’s extraordinary 400-year history.
Brooklyn Historical Society serves more than 45,000 students and teachers annually from all five New York City boroughs through its education programming that includes after-school programs, exhibits, school tours, teachers’ guides, professional development workshops, and curriculum materials. All proceeds from Brooklyn Bounty support these education programs, which have become models for teaching American history.
